about

Jenny was a Timelord

Jenny:TL was probably one of the first of these songs to be conceived and probably the least similar to the way I had originally envisioned it. Problems with some of my instrument plugins abounded. This was especially true of the guitar track (which was soon removed) and the electric violin. Any bowed string is difficult to emulate in software, but quick bowing articulations seem to be where they perform the worst. Part of the reason for the rather languid pace of the violin during the chorus was this poor translation. The distorted toy piano in the chorus was originally a clavinet, but I found that I took up far too much space in the mix to get the sound I envisioned for it. The keyboard part during the verses was in fact originally meant only to support a strummed acoustic guitar line, but with that dropped it stood on its own. Personally I think that the sparseness actually complimented the track fairly well.

The Lyrics were somewhat loosely inspired by an episode of Doctor Who. I suppose that makes this song my slightly cynical love-letter to the Doctor's Daughter.

lyrics

Jenny was a Timelord
by (H+) M.S.G.

Chorus-

It was such an easy way to play
Kisses getting two hearts pounding
Every possibility, no end in sight
Smiles burning you into our minds
You were the same
Only different

Bridge-

Verse 1-

Ripping tracks in gravel
Scatter lights as they fall down
Just to bring you around
For a smile that melts the ink off a page
You weren't the same
It must have been your eyes
Turning shy boys into shouters
I hate to think my clean hands
Could turn you the wrong way
Leaving a void for a less than subtle taste
Let them go
And watch them spin away
You weren't the same

Chorus-

Verse 2-

You had the right side
A pedigree over and through
A fighter from your first day
No one to hold you back
It must have been your eyes
They'll find us running
Filling voids with an itch
Any time seems too long
You weren't the same

Final Chorus-

The plans they have you can almost taste
The wheels were turning
They knew you were the same
Only different
